Powerful 3D software solutions from GOM
GOM is a leading manufacturer of optical measuring systems and offers powerful GOM software solutions from a single source. The building block software concept meets the widely differing requirements of our customers from the manufacturing process through to quality control.
All 3D software solutions are a part of GOM’s industrial metrology systems and also partly available as stand-alone packages.
Evaluation Software for 3D measuring data
GOM Inspect Professional and GOM Inspect are software packages for the analysis of 3D measuring data for quality control, product development and production. The GOM software is used to evaluate 3D measuring data derived from GOM systems, 3D scanners, laser scanners, CTs, CMMs and other sources.
3D Meshes and CAD Import of CAD data, measurement plans and 3D point clouds, creation and editing of polygon meshes. | 3D Inspection Alignment of measuring data to nominal data, dimensional analysis (2D, 3D, GD&T, SPC) and creation of measuring reports. | Free Viewer GOM Inspect is a free viewer for 3D scan data, measuring reports and CAD data. |
Certified Software
The GOM Inspect software packages have been tested and certified by the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The GOM software has been placed in category 1, the category with the smallest measurement deviations.
Parametric Inspection
The GOM software is based on a parametric concept, which forms the underlying foundation for every function. This parametric approach ensures that all process steps are traceable, thus guaranteeing process reliability for measuring results and reports.
Trend Analysis
The underlying parametric concept of the GOM software makes it possible to implement a trend analysis for multiple evaluations, for example, in the statistical process control (SPC). This allows a full-field evaluation of several parts or stages within a single project.

GOM System Software
Open Data Formats
A changing customer manufacturing and metrology environment has led GOM to identify a number of critical software areas which could lead to significant process efficiencies and integrity improvements.
One problematic area identified is where measurement results, evaluations and reports are often only available in closed data formats. Thus it cannot be guaranteed that such data is available in the long term or useable after a few years.
As a system provider GOM knows of the importance of integration of its technical measurement solutions into the process chain of the users. For this purpose, GOM develops open data formats and thus provides a simple exchange or an optimized archiving of measuring and inspection data.
GOM Inspection Exchange Format / Elements (XML)
The GOM Inspection Exchange Format allows the open data exchange of 3D inspection elements for an open handling of measuring and analysis data.
Among others, the GOM Inspection Exchange Format includes primitives, CMM elements, point clouds, sections and touch probe points (no polygon meshes). It is available as of GOM software v6.1.1. This is an open source format and can be implemented without limitations.
With GOM Software Version 8, this format was extended to process additional elements via XML (e.g. meshes, curves, …) and is now called “Elements (XML)” in the software.
The format description is available in English:
The previously published format is also supported:
GOM 3D (.g3d)
With the GOM 3D format, GOM provides a free data format for 3D datasets. This format is faster in reading and saving data, and is more flexible than the known STL format.
The GOM 3D format is provided since 2002 and today is supported in the established CAD/CAM software packages.
A description of the data format is available in English:
- g3d-format-en.pdf (125 K)
You can find several dataset examples here:
